Remembering Our Past

Askew’s Landing RV Park is chock full of historic significance and a long heritage of reinvention.

The land has functioned as the site of an 1800’s Cotton Plantation and Ferry across the Big Black River, a Civil War Battleground, Cattle Farm, and beginning in the early 1980’s, a Mississippi RV Park and Campground, catering to tourists and locals alike.

1800’s Civil War Battleground - Bridgeport Plantation

The Bridgeport Plantation was founded by Duklet Askew in 1859. Originally, the plantation consisted of around 2,000 acres, with 500+ acres cleared for cotton farming and a ferry for travelers across the Big Black River. There was eventually a cotton gin as well as a general store on the property.

Civil War History

On May 17, 1863, as the Civil War raged on throughout the land, Confederate troops fleeing after the Battle of Champion Hill nearby crossed onto the property and used the ferry to flee across the river, burning it behind them to deter the following Union Army. According to LegendsofAmerica.com, “Portions of Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton’s 4th Brigade, commanded by Colonel Alex W. Reynolds, were being pursued by soldiers of General Ulysses S. Grant’s 15th Corps, commanded by General William T. Sherman, when skirmishing broke out at the plantation.” Another skirmish took place at the plantation in June of the same year.

Other Nearby Civil War Sites

Raymond, MS

Vicksburg, MS - Vicksburg National Military Park

With Askew’s Landing RV Campground being just miles from additional significant Civil War sites and battlefields in Raymond, Jackson, and Vicksburg, MS, it’s easy to see why many people interested in the Civil War and American History choose to stay at the park during their time in the area.

Cattle Farm and the Beginnings of the Campground

Sidney Knox Askew, a fourth generation member of the Askew family, lived on the property in 2nd half of the 20th century. He was a cattleman and merchant, running a nearby grocery store in Edwards, MS and grazing cattle on the plantation. By the 1970’s, Askew and his wife, Roma, both avid campers, joined the nearby Vicksburg Good Sam’s Club. During this period, Sidney also had the lake built on the property to expand the previous pond, creating the pristine 15-acre lake that we see today. Soon after, Sidney and Roma invited friends from their camping club to come and visit the site and begin to camp. In 1983, the couple, along with friends from their camping club, launched the beginnings of Askew’s Landing RV Campground.

Modern Updates to Askew’s Landing RV Campground

Growth and Expansion

In 1994, Sidney’s son, Dan, returned to the area and purchased the park, determined to expand the offerings and make the campground a place that all could enjoy. Dan took outdated electrical, sewer, and water systems and modernized them, added 70+ additional RV sites, a cabin onsite for a manager’s residence, and more.

Soon, the RV park began to see record numbers of families and travelers from all over the world visiting the site to fish, play games, celebrate events, camp, and more. Dan also added modern bathhouses, a laundry, saltwater swimming pool, large covered pavilion, and multiple docks.

Dan has provided a fun and family atmosphere at the park for nearly 30 years, which is no small feat.

As the new owners of the park, we cannot be more grateful to Dan for all of his dedication and hard work to make Askew’s a great place for so many people to enjoy in the past and in years to come. We now have monthly and short term rv camping, tent camping, and a glamping getaway cabin in the Jackson, Mississippi area available.
